Celebrate the AAPI community with a jam-packed day of book readings and discussions; AAPI museum gallery tours; living history; art making and conversations with community partners; and an AAPI family guide.   

Sunday Story Time
11:30am–12:30pm, ages 3-6
Read Fatima’s Great Outdoors, written by Ambreen Tariq and illustrated by Stevie Lewis. Fatima and her family have just moved from India to the United States and are about to set out on their first camping trip! Fatima loves listening to her favorite music and eating her favorite foods from India while she learns how to prepare the campsite. After the story, create your own campsite craft!

Artmaking with Make Us Visible
1-3pm, all ages
Representatives from Make Us Visible, Blasian March, and the Filipino American National Historical Society invite families to stop by their tables to learn more about the AAPI community through coloring pages, free books, games, and more.

Reading into History: The Secret Battle of Evan Pao
1–2:30pm, ages 9-12
Discuss The Secret Battle of Evan Pao by Wendy Wan-Long Shang, winner of the Asian/Pacific American Librarians Association Award for Children's Literature. After moving from California to Virginia, Evan Pro finds a unique way to make himself part of his new school's annual Civil War celebration, but the reaction is swift and violent. Evan must decide whether he will react with the same cruelty shown to him, or choose a different path.

Living History: Learning About Historical Korean Clothing
1–3pm, all ages
Jeff Cheon-Shik Yang, a traditional hanbok designer, interacts with families and shares the history of hanbok, traditional Korean clothing. Families will be able to see traditional hanbok worn and explore how they were made.

Living History: Chinese Soldiers in the American Civil War
1–3pm, all ages
Explore the untold story of Chinese soldiers in the American Civil War with historical interpreter Anneliese Meck. Families can interact with photographs and primary sources to redefine who gets a Civil War story—what “hidden histories” will you uncover?

Hablemos: Recorrido en español / Guided visit in Spanish
3–4:30 pm, ages 6-9
A Spanish-language family program explores paintings from the museum’s collection that reflect the rich cultural history of the AAPI community.
